Facebook

Can China Have Its Own Lin Shuhao?

In the past week, the “Basketball Boy” Lin Shuhao news

are spreading around the world.

Forbes magazine estimates the brand value of the 23-year-old

Lin had jumped to $14 million, ranking sixth in the world.

His athlete’s brand value is the fastest growing

in the world at the moment.

Having Chinese background, he once again made people

discuss whether China can “create” its own Lin Shuhao?

On February 20th, Lin Shuhao once again inspired the fans

of the host NBA field, New York Knicks.

Assist, steals, cut-in or long shot, each of them were amazing.

His play was not just skills, but it made the basketball alive.

Lin Shuhao is the first Harvard’ graduate in NBA

for nearly half a century.

The legend Lin Shuhao have created makes many basketball

fans know his success story well.

Lin Shuhao was born in California, US, with his father

Lin Jiming and mother Wu Xinxin coming from Taiwan.

With this background and being on focus, the “Harvard boy”

makes people reflect on the Chinese sport’s system again.

Hannah Bates, Times’s reporter in the US, asked in an article,

can China “create” someone like Lin Shuhao?

Bates believes this is now almost impossible, as China

does not value the enthusiasm of the players in basketball.

However, Lin Shuhao’s skills of ball control and defense

need creativity, which is eroding in Chinese sport’s system.

Chen Kai, a former Chinese basketball national team player,

shared his view in the issue.

Chen pointed out that China’s nationwide sport’s system

is such that it can arbitrarily dismiss athletes.

This makes the Chinese players feel very insecure

and not ready to take responsibilities.

Chen Kai: “(Chinese) players are like skating on a thin ice,

for fear of making mistakes.

But in the basketball sport you should dare make the move

at the right moment, you should dare shoot a basket.

When the culture is that everyone wants to avoid

responsibility, how can he play basketball well? This is a very deep cultural reason.”

Lin’s success was rated with clear American characteristics.

It’s a typical success that depends on the individual’s effort.

However, Chen Kai pointed out that a sport’s system,

which is nationwide but centrally controlled is a sick one.

Kai Chen: “Its whole system is to eliminate person’s passion,

to eradicate individual’s recognition, hobbies, sports, etc.

And Lin Shuhao, he really loves this sport.

He plays basketball very passionately and is devoted.

Whether 30 or 40 minutes, he just loves to play.

So sports are a reflection of the social culture.”

When Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni was interviewed,

he said that Lin Shuhao’s inner world is very great.

And when Lin Shuhao was interviewed by Taiwan media,

he showed that belief is very important to him.

Chen Kai: “A person with belief is genuine

and does not lie.

Since you don’t lie, when you play you’ll focus on the game,

instead of concentrating on finding excuses for yourself.

Lin Shuhao sometimes makes mistakes when playing.

It does not matter if you make mistakes.

A person with belief knows that he can learn

from it and make a progress.

I think this is very, very important.

How a person plays basketball reflects his life.”

Apple founder Steve Jobs was a Buddhist. Last year, when

he left us people spoke of the link between belief and success.

But very few people in China have religious beliefs;

therefore “China does not have its Steve Jobs.”

In China personal beliefs are not only unprotected by law,

but people can lose their freedom and lives for their beliefs.
