Two weeks ago we reported on veteran Chinese dissident Zhu Yufu, who was charged for inciting subversion of state power after sharing a poem with some friends online.

On Tuesday, Zhu went to trial in his hometown of Hangzhou. Zhu’s poem, titled, “It’s Time,” was brought out as evidence during the almost three-hour trial.

Part of the poem reads, “It’s time to use your feet to go to the square and make a choice.”

Zhu’s lawyer, Li Dunyong, said that the poem “was meant to express his yearning for democracy. But as he said himself in the courtroom, it didn’t say to gather in any specific square or at any specific time, so people could not have organized themselves based on this poem.”

Li said the trial concluded Tuesday morning with no verdict. He said a verdict was likely by mid-February.
