Facebook

A New Era for Kim Jong-Un Begins

The funeral of Kim Jon-iI, the North Korean dictator,

signaled the end of his 17 years iron-fist rule since the Cold War days.

At his memorial service on Dec. 29, his son Kim Jong-un

was declared the new military and political “supreme leader".

The “Kim Jong-un era" has officially begun.

And so have new diplomatic efforts for the Korean peninsula.

Around 100,000 military personnel and civilians attended

Kim Jong-il’s memorial service in Pyongyang on Dec. 29th.

Kim Yong Nam, the Chairman of the North Korean Presidium

of the Supreme People’s Assembly,

declared Kim Jong-un as “the top leader of the party,

the state and the military”.

Kim Jong-un was seen walking next to his late father’s

hearse during the funeral procession of December 28th.

Official media Labor News reported the leadership’s new

pledges of loyalty to successor Kim Jong-un.

And the UN headquarters flew its flag

half-mast according to protocol.

The 40 km funeral procession paraded under snow whether

and to the cries of hundreds of thousands of attendees.

A retired professor of Shandong University, Sun Wenguang,

says the scene reminded him of Mao Zedong’s funeral,

the former Chinese Communist Party dictator of the 70’s.

Sun Wenguang: “In their propaganda, Kim Jong-il has been

called “the great leader, the savior of the people “.

Such kind of education and infusion made a lot of

people grieve deeply, thinking that his death pulled the heavens down.

This is almost the same as what happened in China in 1976.

It is actually a result of the deification of their leader. “

Kim Jong-un will be observing a three-year mourning period.

His father’s body will be embalmed and placed in a crystal

coffin at Fairview Hill Memorial Palace for public homage,

and placed next to his grandfather Kim Il-sung.

Writer Xie Zhaoping says this is a feudal system tradition.

Xie Zhaoping: “It’s actually a remnant of feudal manifestation.

You find similar practices in socialist states or in communist

ruling countries, like with Lenin, or in China and North Korea.

I think the different political systems contribute to this practice."

Labor News claims the greatest legacy the late Kim Jong-il

left to the country are its nuclear weapons and satellites.

On Dec. 27th, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and

other senior military officials went to the North Korean embassy in Beijing to pay their condolences.

The next day, the Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson

denied claims that Chinese armies had entered North Korea.

On Dec. 28th, the North Korean state television broadcasted

the test-firing of long-range missiles of April 2009.

The UN, in response, left the Six-Party Talks and

strengthened its sanctions against North Korea.

The late Kim Jong-il ruled North Korea for 17 years with an

iron fist. Two million civilians starved to death during a severe famine in the 1990’s.

A report from the UN says the country needs an urgent food

rescue for about six million people, a third of its population.

Chosun Ilbo Daily News published an editorial entitled:

“How Does South Korea Asses Kim Jong-il?” on Dec. 29th.

The South Korean daily says that Kim Jong-il had deleted

terms from its constitution such as “Marxism-Leninism and communism”, and any expressions from socialism.

Apparently, Kim Jong-il’s ideology was to be the only one and

his father Kim Il-sung was seen as the founder of North Korea.

According to Daily News Chosun Ilbo, Kim Jong-il’s

deathbed wish was to suspend any uranium-enrichment facilities in exchange for 240,000 tons of U.S. food aid.

The Six-Party Talk South Korean delegation leader stated

on Dec. 28th that both South Korea and the U.S. agreed to resume dialogue with North Korea.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, in 2012

the Chinese regime will offer half a million tons of food aid to North Korea.

While Japan plans to expand its influence in the country

in line with South Korea and the U.S. Even Russia

is now set to get more involved with any North Korean issues.

As the mourning for Kim Jong-il ends, so begins the Six-Party

Talks’ new diplomatic efforts towards the Korean peninsula.
