CCP Infiltrates Hong Kong Universities

Liao Weiyi, a Students Union (SU) chairman candidate

in Hong Kong』s Lingnan University (HKLU),

recently announced that it would take a neutral position

with regards to China』s Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4,1989.

He also says he is a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) member.

People at the university want to see him dismissed.

SU representative chairman, Deng Jianhua, emphasized that

SU wants to see proper closure to the June 4 incident.

Scholars point out that since the CCP』s takeover of Hong Kong,

the CCP』s infiltration into the university has been a serious issue.

Liao』s announcement could be a CCP test,

to see how people would respond to it.

In October, HKLU placed a symbolic sculpture

of the June 4 incident on campus.

SU chairman candidate, Liao Weiyi, announced that

he is a CCP member.

A member of the SU cabinet put a statement on a notice board

suggesting that

Liao be immediately dismissed from the SU cabinet

“as his presence has caused a loss of credibility within the union."

SU supervisor, Deng Jianhua, said that this is the first time ever

that a CCP member joined the SU cabinet.

SU』s representative committee called for a meeting to discuss

the situation.

According to SU cabinet election rules, the dismissal or

withdrawal of a candidate cannot be based on his political background.

The election will be held as scheduled next week.

Deng said his vote would uphold the traditional spirit of HKLU.

Deng Jianhua: “Following our traditional spirit,

such as vindication for the victims of the June 4 incident

and the promotion of democracy,

these core values need to be maintained."

Some people are worried that students will start to take on

communist leanings, but Deng believes that the students won』t be manipulated by the CCP.

Deng Jianhua: “I don』t think I need to worry about this.

It should be everyone』s responsibility in HKLU, I am not worried about it; I should trust everyone."

Deng stated that if the election results come out next week,

and Liao Weiyi had not been elected; they will hold the election again on Jan or Feb of next year.

Deng hopes to have more candidates join the election.

Cheng Ming, a deputy professor at the Hong Kong University

of Science and Technology (HKUST),

said that since 1997, the CCP』s infiltration into the university

has become a serious issue.

Cheng Ming: “What we have seen is the CCP sends different

people to different places on campus,

intending to split and attack people, showing that the CCP

would do the same in the other societies and political areas, and it could be even worse."

For example, in 2009, the chairman of the Hong Kong

University Students Union made a public announcement about the June 4 incident proclaiming the CCP』s innocence.

Cheng Ming heard that the Chinese University of Hong Kong

is also being infiltrated by the CCP.

Cheng Ming: “This year, when some students who supported

the democracy moment had debates over finances, some leftists accused them of financial corruption."

The chairman candidate of the SU openly declared

his CCP affiliation.

Cheng Ming believes that this may have been set up by

the CCP to test peoples』 reaction.

Cheng Ming: “Liao Weiyi and his supervisor thought

his admittance of being a CCP member can be used

as a test to see what the reaction of

the community and SU will be.

But nothing works, they had political risks,

and the risks have already exist.

Zheng Yusuo, professor of Hong Kong』s City University

believes that the CCP』s infiltration style is “very common."

Zheng Yushuo: “As you may know, the CCP』s 『united front』

tactics have become more common, and it is getting more developed.

I believe the CCP will carry on with these tactics

and continue to improve upon them.

Some pro-CCP students who are also CCP members,

are trying to become SU leaders.

I think this will become common place in the near future."

Zheng Yushuo points out that the CCP』s infiltration into SU,

is not limited to SU, but also other teachers』 groups.

Many scholars consider their personal interests and dare not

criticise the CCP, but instead promote the CCP』s so-called achievements.
