Mystery of Ai Weiwei’s Parole
Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei was detained
by the Chinese authorities for nearly three months.
On Wed, authorities suddenly announced his release.
Within and outside of China, there are discussions
on the reasons of his release and on Ai’s future.
Ai once again became the focus of world attention.
On June 22, the communist party (CCP) mouthpiece
Xinhua News published an English dispatch that said,
Ai had been released on parole.
At 1 a.m. on June 23, Ai returned to his residence.
He met briefly with dozens of reporters waiting for him.
He told the reporters in English and Mandarin that
as he was released on bail, he couldn’t say anything.
Ai thanked the reporters and soon went home.
After dawn, Ai appeared outside his apartment again.
Ai Weiwei: I cannot have interviews. I’m sorry.
I just want to see everyone. Cannot have (interviews),
because you know the situation I am in now.
Reporter: Will you always stay at home?
Do you have plans to walk about…?
Ai Weiwei: I cannot leave Beijing.
Current Issue Commentator Zhang Tianliang believes
that Ai was detained by authorities for over 80 days.
The authorities never informed his family.
This is a violation of the legal procedures.
Zhang Tianliang: After the Jasmine Revolution
broke out in Middle East and North Africa,
the CCP has even less confidence in its own regime.
The people’s discontentment is enormous.
There are many examples of people’s resistance.
So the CCP wants to subdue all individuals
that are influential among the Chinese people.
Zhang said given Ai’s treatment by the CCP,
people are more worried about the safety of
Gao Zhisheng and other imprisoned activists.
What kind of torture are they subject to?
This remains a mystery to the outside world.
Xinhua announced on June 22 that Ai was released
because he had pleaded guilty to tax evasion,
he has chronic diseases, and he repeatedly
expressed his willingness to pay back evaded taxes.
AFP commented that Ai had paid a price of
“pleading guilty" to obtain his parole.
Beijing-based lawyer Liu Wei told NTDTV that
while Ai was in custody, there was no written notice.
So this kind of parole has no legal basis.
Liu Wei: His family didn’t receive a detention notice.
After the detention period expired,
there was no arrest notice issued.
Right before the anniversary of Tiananmen Massacre,
the official media said that he was under surveillance.
However, Ai’s family received no written notice.
Ai’s mother Gao Ying told Radio Free Asia that
she also heard from the media about Ai’s parole.
She wasn’t notified by the police.
Amnesty International calls on the CCP government
to give Ai a “fair trial" with international observers.
Amnesty International told Voice of America that
as Ai is now released, he must not be under
“illegal house arrest” like the other Chinese dissidents.
