The Banned “Anyuan Chronicle”

Yu Jianrong, a social science scholar, published

in February 2011 his new book “Anyuan Chronicle.”

The book described Anyun City’s past and present.

In September 1922, authorities of Anyuan Mine

in Jinagxi refused to pay workers overdue wages.

The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) exploited

conflicts between workers and employers

and instigated a huge strike. Scholars commented

that now workers are worse off than before,

as they are not allowed to even go on strike.

In the 1920s, there were more than 10,000 workers,

plus a few thousand unemployed workers in Anyun,

Jiangxi. It was the most concentrated workers’ area.

Yu Jianrong’s “Anyun Chronicle” provided

a large quantity of insider investigations

and current conditions of Chinese workers.

However, Participation News Network (PNN)

based overseas, said Anyuan Chronicle has recently

been banned by the Central Propaganda Department.

Shenzhen-based freelance writer Zhao Dagong:

“Yu Jianrong is mainly reviewing some history,

and telling some truths. CCP is not a workers’ party,

therefore, it is afraid of basic truth being revealed.”

Website “One Boat Book Stacks” commented

that it took Professor Yu Jianrong four long years

to do extensive research, including 69 interviews.

He narrowly escaped being detained twice.

Workers of today are facing marginalization, and he

made the most rational and profound interpretation.

Zhejiang dissident writer, Chen Shuqing:

“Now the workers’ status, social and economical,

including social security, is in a miserable state

and is just like the system claimed. Yu’s new book

tells the truth and questions CCP’s legitimacy.

The CCP has no other choice but to ban the book.”

Anyuan Chronicle says that an old worker told Yu:

“Now officials tell us that a reform has its price,

but why can’t those officials who make big money

and live good life make some sacrifices themselves?

They ask us, the old, lowly and retired workers

to make sacrifices. What kind of asinine logic

is that? They are a bunch of crooks.”

Anyuan Chronicle states: “In April 2001,

the Anyuan Mine laid-off 545 workers,

including 322 permanent, and 223 contract workers.

After paying social security, housing, water,

electricity and other expenses, basic living expenses

were RMB83,206.94. RMB152.67 per capital,

including RMB150.41 for permanent workers

and RMB155.93 for contract workers.

The Anyuna Mine had 4344 official employees

with a layoff rate of 12.5%.

Zhao Dagong: “Anyun workers’ condition

is the same after comparing the past and the present.

That means it is only a change of rulers.

The live of poor Anyuan workers is very miserable.

In the past, workers had the right to strike,

now they don’t even have that.”

PNN introduced Anyuan Chronicle

as a collective memory of the glories and sufferings

of workers in a Republic Era, stirring and shocking,

reflecting the dissatisfaction and doubt of workers

towards their social status and live underground.

Since Chinese authorities prohibited the publication

of Anyun Chronicle, Jiang Su Publishing House’

Director has written an in-depth book review

which can be found on the two largest online

book stores in China – Dangdang and Joyo.
