Facebook

Sympathy Over Bin Laden’s Death?

Since 2001, mastermind of the September 11

terrorist attack, Osama bin Laden, has been U.S.’s

most wanted man. On May 1, 2011,

four U.S. Special Forces helicopters

launched a sudden raid on a villa

outside the capital of Pakistan, and killed bin Laden.

Bin Laden’s death ignited heated talks in China.

Experts point out that this major event affects

the world pattern, marking the end of all dictators.

U.S. President Barack Obama said all people

that believe in peace and human dignity

should cheer the death of Osama bin Laden.

Former U.S. President George. W Bush said

that the U.S. sent a clear message:

“No matter how long it takes, justice will be done."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy,

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev

all expressed relief upon the death of Bin Laden.

British Prime Minister David Cameron expressed

his thanks to Obama, but warned that the death

of bin Laden does not mean the end of terrorism.

Commentator Cao Changqing: “Bin Laden is the

symbolic figure of global terrorism. His death

is likely to lead to the decline and even collapse

of global terrorism. It has a significant impact

on the global strategic pattern.”

United Nations Security Council issued a statement

saying this is decisive progress in the global fight

against terrorism. UN Secretary-General

Ban Ki-moon announced that bin Laden’s death

is a key turning point in the global war on terror.

Former Chinese Broadcasting director of RFI

(Radio France International), Wu Baozhang said:

“I think this is a major event affecting the

political situation around the world. The U.S. killed

bin Laden and will gradually withdraw troops

from Afghanistan and Iraq. The U.S. will then

be free to solve problems elsewhere in the world.

At present the situation in Arab countries has shown

the future direction of the world."

Xia Ming, Professor of political science at

City University of New York, expressed that

young people in Arab countries want peace and

democracy, which in itself is to abandon violence

represented by bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

Xia Ming (Professor of political science at CUNY):

“Bin Laden’s use of violence for 30+ years did not

bring any significant change to the Arab world.

It put the Arab world into even greater disaster.

The new generation of Arab people have made

much greater achievements through non-violent

Jasmine Revolutions or color revolutions.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on May 2,

that bin Laden’s death is an important event

and a positive progress in the international fight

against terrorism. But Chinese Communist Party’s

(CCP) media publicly showed sympathy,

in addition to misleading public opinion.

Cao Changqing (Commentator): “CCP has been

using bin Laden and terrorism as a play card

to deal with the U.S. When the U.S. fight against

terrorism, it needs China’s cooperation and support,

so the U.S. had to make some compromises

and concessions. Now this play card is gone,

thus reducing CCP’s ability to bargain.

This is good news for the free world

represented by the U.S. and the West.”

Bin Laden’s death became a hot topic in forums

in China. Many netizens cheered, while some

regard him as “a martyr against U.S. hegemony."

Netizens said: “Bin Laden is nothing

compared to CCP’s state terrorism."

“Now the U.S. can free itself to deal with CCP."

Chinese freelance writer Meng Zhao pointed out

that bin Laden’s death is a warning to the CCP:

“Any enemy of the civilized world, no matter how

cunning it is, ultimately cannot escape justice

and punishment! People are more confident that

totalitarianism will be buried in the 21st century

and dictators will be sent to the gallows.”

China Interim Government spokesman,

Tang Baiqiao said bin Laden’s death will greatly

encourage Chinese people, especially their pursuit

of justice and democracy. It will play a huge role

particularly in democratic revolutions in China.

So history will turn a new page.
