“Red Songs” for Top Posts
Authorities in Chongqing recently intensified
the “red songs” campaign requesting public to learn
and sing 36 “red songs” selected by the Chinese
Communist Party’s (CCP) Propaganda Department.
Analysts say it reveals the ambitions of Bo Xilai,
party secretary of Chongqing, in securing a post
in the top echelons of party leadership next year.
Party praising 36 “red songs” were selected
for the nationwide “red songs” campaign
to celebrate the 90th anniversary of CCP’s founding.
Ten songs that “reflect time’s main theme”
will be selected and taught to public in mid-May.
These 36 “red songs” are being broadcasted
through various media in recent days.
Ms Wang: “I don’t really like these ‘red songs’.
I want to sing the songs we really love,
not the so-called ‘red songs’ selected by them.
As a Chinese citizen, I can honestly say that
the people are not living a happy life in China.
There is oppression and persecution everywhere,
how can people support a government like this?”
Chongqing authorities requested state-run media to
promote the 36 “red songs” from April 10 to May 20.
Hu Ping (Editor-in-Chief at Beijing Spring):
“Requesting the public to sing ‘red songs’
is in fact a kind of brainwashing.
It is forcing people to bend and accept the regime.
It is a cover-up in nature
because everyone knows what is underneath.
But you have to agree with it,
otherwise you are politically untrustworthy.”
Chongqing city had so far over 150,000 activities
of “singing red songs",
and accumulated participation of 90 million people.
Authorities require everyone to learn and sing
these 36 “red songs”.
Hu Ping believes the “red songs” campaign is linked
to the power struggle before CCP’s 18th Congress.
“Sing red, crack black" has been an important
Bo Xilai’s political play supported by Jiang clique.
If Bo gains the upper hand in CCP’s 18th congress,
China will be in an even bigger danger.
Hu Ping: “The ‘red songs’ campaign was started
by Bo Xilai in Chongqing.
If the ‘sing red, crack black’ campaign
is carried out nationwide,
it will indicate the ‘Chongqing model’ creator
Bo Xilai’s rise in the CCP leadership.”
Li Yuanchao, head of CCP’s Organization Department
praised Bo’s “sing red, crack black” campaign
during his visit to Chongqing from April 16 to 18.
Since last year, several high-ranking CCP leaders
have visited Chongqing, including Chairman of the
National Congress Wu Bangguo,
Vice President Xi Jinping,
head of the Discipline Commission He Guoqiang,
and head of the Political
and Legislative Committee Zhou Yongkang.
