In a wide-ranging address to the U.N. General Assembly, U.S. President Barack Obama took aim at Iran — a country that he said has failed to meet its responsibilities as a member of the international community.

[Barack Obama, U.S. President]:

“Now let me be clear once more: the United States and the international community seek a resolution to our differences with Iran, and the door remains open to diplomacy should Iran choose to walk through it. But the Iranian government must demonstrate a clear and credible commitment, and confirm to the world the peaceful intent of its nuclear program."

With the Israeli delegation absent from his speech because of a Jewish holiday, the President reaffirmed his commitment to concluding a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians – an agreement that many American Presidents have tried – but failed – to achieve.

[Barack Obama, U.S. President]:

“This time, we should draw upon the teachings of tolerance that lie at the heart of three great religions that see Jerusalem’s soil as sacred. This time we should reach for what’s best within ourselves. If we do, when we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations – an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel."

Turning his attention to the world economy, President Obama said the world had been pulled back from the brink of depression in the wake of the global financial crisis.

He also said the U.S. would support a process on climate change in which all major economies met their responsibilities to protect the planet.
