Facebook

Can Any Signs be Seen in the Chinese Military Documentary?

Recently, a video produced by China’s PLA National

Defense University (NDU) circulated online.

It shows how the Soviet Union collapsed and criticizes

members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),

intellectuals and non-governmental organizations, for being

infiltrated by the US, causing disintegration to the CCP.

Commentators believe that it is a dangerous signal that

the military is intervening in politics.

Analysts say that the film tells Chinese people

that the CCP’s collapse will not happen in China.

Some scholars question the film’s assertion that China

and the US are strategy partners;

but the film also states that the US wants to subvert China.

Which one is correct?

Let’s take a look.

The propaganda film, Silence Contest, is 90 minutes

with two parts.

It was produced in June by the highest military institution,

NDU.

The chief producer is NDU’s Political Commissar,

General Liu Yazhou, son of Li Xiannian, former vice chairman of the CCP.

Sources say that this is the first time the military openly

produced a film for a political program.

At the beginning, the film explains how the Soviet Union

collapsed during the US-Soviet Cold War.

Wu Fan, chief editor of US-based Chinese magazine,

China Affairs, analyzes that the CCP is worried it will

collapse like the communist Soviet Union.

The film foretells the CCP’s next move.

Wu Fan: “Xi Jinping’s direction is to unite leftists, neutralists,

and rightists in order to maintain power and socialism.

They show fear regarding the Soviet Union’s collapse

and the communist collapse appearing in China.

Thus at the beginning of the film, they defamed

Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, calling them traitors,

as these men didn’t insist on communism.”

The film shows Russian first President Yeltsin openly

quitting communist Soviet.

Lin Zixu, current affairs commentator: “Many people likely

hope the CCP will collapse soon after watching the video.

I believe the scene where Yeltsin quit the communist party

will touch many people’s hearts.”

Observers believe that Yeltsin made three great achievements:

quitting the communist party; ending the communist Soviet

Union; and initiating the democracy process,

which not only influenced Russia

but also progressed Russian history.

Lin Zixu says that if the video had been launched years

earlier, it would have brainwashed some people’s minds.

However, stirring it up today has just the opposite effect.

Lin “This video is promoted through network websites

but not state-run media.

It is likely manipulated by one faction of the CCP.

It indicates the intensified struggle within the party

before the CCP’s Third Plenary Sessions.

The film intends to use Deng Xiaoping to warn party

officials who want to make a breakthrough not to move

casually, otherwise, what happened to communist Soviet

Union is the outcome.”

The film describes how after the Soviet Union collapsed,

the US strategic goals shifted.

The film claimed that the US intends to subvert China

in five ways including infiltrating politics, culture, thought,

organizations, political intervention and the society.

Zhang Lifan, modern Chinese history scholar, told Hong

Kong’s Ming Pao that the film shows the viewpoint

of military interests.

Zhang says that by saying Sino-US relations are extremely

subversive and by using conspiracy theory excuses,

more defense funds can be obtained.

Regarding the relationship between China and the US

mentioned in the film, many points are groundless.

Zhang questioned the part where the film mentioned that

Sino-US are strategy partners.

And then the film also said that the US wants

to subvert China.

Which one is correct?

If the US wants to subvert China, why did the high-level

CCP officials transfer their money and family to the US?

Do they do it for espionage events?”

Netizen Hok Kut Wong: “If it is the case,

why did China buy so much US debt?

Why did China become the US’s largest debt holder?

Does China fund its enemy?”

Lin Zixu says the film is being used to deceive civilians.

Currently, China’s social crises are everywhere,

and there are many contradictions.

Civilians are complaining about the CCP, thus the CCP

cunningly diverted the complaints to the US.

Lin: “The film cunningly transfers the social problems

caused by the CCP onto the US.

They are trying to get Chinese people to blame the US.

Thus the CCP can obtain a chance to breathe.”

Silent Contest openly criticized governmental organs,

claiming they, “used national resources to infiltrate

with Western ideology and cultures in order to pave the road.”

Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported that if “cultural,

party and governmental organs are so dirty, does another

Cultural Revolution military control system need

to be launched to support the leftist movement?”
