Chinese Eyewitness Testimony from Syria Suggests Opposition Group Did Not Use Chemical Weapons
Allegations over chemical weapons attacks on innocent
civilians in Syria has aroused international condemnation.
The US, France and Britain are in discussion
over military action, to prevent the Syrian
government from using chemical weapons.
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state controlled
media has published a series of articles on this topic.
The articles suggest the US and their collaborators are using
the incident as an excuse to support a Syrian uprising.
The articles claim that the chemical weapons attacks
were likely to have come from opposition groups.
NTD reporters interviewed Chinese national who
worked closely with the opposition group last year.
His witness account is very different
from what the CCP media claims.
Use of chemical weapons in the current Syrian conflict is
said to have crossed a red line for international conventions.
This has been condemned by the US,
UK, France and other Western countries.
These countries feel that military action needs to take place,
and are awaiting results from the current UN inspections
Chuck Hagel, Secretary of the US Defense, said
that the US military are waiting in Mediterranean.
They are on stand by for the go-ahead
from President Obama to begin strikes.
On August 28, the CCP state media,
People’s Daily published an article.
The article claimed military intervention in Syria will fuel civil
war, and prevent the UN from resolving the conflict in Syria.
Xinhua News also claimed that it is likely the
chemical attacks were from opposition groups.
A spokeswoman for the UK Prime Minister David Cameron
said he and US President Obama had confirmed that
all the information proved chemical weapon
attacks took place.
The Iranian President and the Syria
regime also admitted the incident.
Chen Weiming, is a sculptor, who
has recently returned from Syria:
“I didn’t see chemical weapon where
I went. They use conventional arms.
These were general light weapons, as
well as medium weapons and cannons.
I think the weapons they used are out of date.
There are some machine guns and tanks.
Light weapons like bazookas. There are
no heavy weapons, nor chemical weapons."
Chen Weiming has been supporting the opposition
group and fought with them for three months last year.
He has been to several cities and stayed
in the headquarters of the opposition group.
Chen said that as soon as the Assad regime
found the city was occupied by opposition
groups, he ordered bombing of the entire city.
Chen suggest that it is the Assad regime
that the opposition group is against.
He believes the opposition group would
not use chemical weapons against civilians.
Chen said that as the CCP has never supported
UN sanctions against the Syrian dictatorship,
Syrian civilians don’t like Chinese people.
Before Chen arrived in Syria, a team of Chinese people
went to Syria and claimed they supported opposition groups.
They went to a secret compound for the opposition.
After those Chinese people left, the
compound was bombed immediately.
Thus, the opposition groups are
cautious about Chinese people.
Chen Weiming: “They were very alert and suspicious
about me, as many people didn’t know my background.
Some Syrian’s asked if I worked for CIA, and
how many bombs will they need to blow up a city.
They suspected me. Once they knew I
was not a spy, they became very friendly."
China has been against western military intervention in Syria.
Since 2011, China and Russia twice vetoed UN Security
Counci resolutions pressuring Syrian President Assad.
The US Congressional Research Department
said in a 2011 report that Russia and China
are some of the main arm suppliers for Syria.
Syria’s conventional weapons are mainly provided by Russia.
From 2003 to 2010, China provided
weapons to Syria worth $300 Million.
The UK and France stated on August 28, that they
will put forward a proposal to the UN Security Council.
This condemns the Syrian regime using chemical weapons.
They requested “authorizing all necessary
measures to protect civilians" in Syria.
Media reported that the US has listed initial
target, which include fewer than 50 sites.
These limited attacks aim to ensure the US
won’t become involved in a long-term war.
The White House stressed that the goal of the
operation against Syria is “not about regime change."
it is intended to help “deter and degrade"
chemical weapon attacks that happened.
The Charter of the UN Chapter VII states:
“Action with respect to threats to the peace,
breaches of the peace and acts of aggression,
it may take such action by air, sea, or land forces
as may be necessary to maintain or
restore international peace and security."
