Facebook

Lens Magazine, on hiatus for May or closed?

Mainland Chinese magazine Lens Visual postponed

its May issue for a week without specific explanations.

It is widely believed that the magazine’s earlier reports on

Masanjia labor camp angered authorities, leading to the delay.

The International Federation of Reporters published

a statement condemning Chinese authorities for suppressing the media. Below is our report.

SEEC Media Group’s Lens Vision magazine

announced on its official Weibo on May 5th

to postpone the May issue for a week,

and that this issue maintains its “sincerity."

Mainland netizens Blue Whale Finance Reporter released

news that “another magazine ceased publication."

He wrote, “Lens Visual magazine published

‘Walking Out of Masanjia’in April 2013,

(is) to uncover the abuse of female inmates in the

Women’s Labor Camp in Liaoning Province.

Because of this, publication has temporarily ceased."

Mainland netizens widely circulated this news,

which was soon re-shared en masse via Sina.

It is unclear now whether Lens Visual

is permanently closed or only on hiatus.

Hu Ping, editor-in-chief of political commentary

magazine Beijing Spring, believes that

Chinese authorities’ actions against Lens magazine

proves the truth of the Masanjia crimes.

Hu Ping: “Reports from Mainland Chinese media about

Masanjia confirmed earlier reports by overseas media, including Falun Gong media.

Chinese authorities later negated these reports and

now attempt to close this magazine.

From this we can tell that CCP’s top leader

are disputing fiercely over this issue."

Federation of International Journalists (IFJ) issued a statement

Tuesday regarding the Lens magazine incident.

The statement criticized Chinese authorities’

suppression of the media, calling their action against Lens magazine dishonest.

IFJ information and human rights official

Ernest Sagaga told Voice of America that

the Chinese regime violated press freedom.

If the CCP believed the content of Len’s article was inaccurate,

they can seek other way to solve the problem.

For example, ask author the questions to correct it.

However, to stop Lens publication and cancel their

publication license, was autocratic.

Zan Aizong, former Zhejiang China Ocean News reporter,

said CCP authorities have maintained very strict control of press.

They require all media to follow their mouthpieces

in singing for the “excellent situation"of the country,

and “great achievements"of the Party,

as well as the “Chinese dream.”

Zan Aizong, former Zhejiang reporter of China Ocean News:

“If the reports involve political issues, such as labor camp

detainment, abuses, etc., the reports become sensitive.

Press and Publication Administration and the Central

Propaganda Department ordered Liaoning government

to investigate the issue, and Liaoning claimed it

to be a false report.

According to their requirements, false reports

will cause the media to cease publication. That’s what’s happening right now."

Sagaga also said that whenever the CCP now

takes aims at suppressing news reports,

official punishment will have to go through legal channels,

when the accused can present fact statement.

In addition, punitive measures should be

subject to judicial review.

The CCP simply implements administrative

punishment to this magazine.

Gao Yu, senior media person in Beijing, also revealed

on Weibo the reason for the delay of Lens magazine’s May issue.

He said this magazine is registered in Heilongjiang Province.

The authorities claimed trans-regional reports legal,

by which to stop the magazine from operation in Beijing.

At present, the magazine is trying to find

a registration in Beijing.

It remains to be seen whether the magazine

can resume publication.

Gao Yu said that such are the usual practices

the CCP uses to control the media.

In addition, the law section of New Century magazine

under Caixin Media Co. recently ceased publication.

CCP’s mouthpiece media, Yanhuang Chunqiu,

received warning.

Gao Yu revealed to “Deutsche Welle" that

CCP authorities now inflict unprecedented rigorous

control on the media, Internet, and publication.

The manipulation of ideology has exceeded

the period of former Party leader Hu Jintao.

So has the media management.

He believes that people will soon realize the change.
