Confiscated Magazines or Bestsellers?
The “Bo Xilai event” has attracted great concern both
domestically in China, and internationally.
Time magazine has chosen Bo Xilai twice as it’s cover story.
62 Time magazines published in May were confiscated
by Chinese Customs.
They had been mailed from U.S headquarters to Beijing.
Recently, mainland Chinese tourists have chosen a new
hotspot to visit abroad.
These are bookstores where books on the Bo event are sold.
“World News” reported that Chinese Customs seized
62 Time magazines.
Time chose Bo Xilai as the cover for the issue published
on May 14, with a slogan “People’s Republic of Scandal”.
It is reported that Chinese Customs notified Time magazine
by using the phrase “to be dealt with”.
Time magazine gave up reclaiming materials as Customs
did not mention who will deal with the confiscated magazines.
It is reported that many mainland Chinese tour groups
made a special trip to a Chinese bookstore in Los Angeles.
The target of this trip is to buy newspapers and books
on the Bo event.
Tourists like to buy all the different versions of books,
magazines and newspapers on the Bo event.
The bookstore manager said, “There was never such a peak
in number of customers, even during the June 4 period.”
Yedu, coordinator of Internet Committee at Independent
Chinese PEN Center said that the Bo event has caused
a larger shaking force than the Lin Biao event in a sense.
This is because the Internet causes a fermented effect.
Yedu: “Because in this society, people in different classes
feel dissatisfied with social status quo to different degrees.
People are eager to have a change.
However, they cannot see any hope.
The Bo event makes people see the social status quo.
They hope there will be a change caused by the event. This is the popular mood.”
After the Wang Lijun and Bo Xilai events, the Epoch Times
became an instant sensation in Hong Kong.
According to statistics, four issues saw sales soaring to more
than 20,000 copies in one month after the event.
80% of the customers are from the mainland,
and 20% are local people.
The most popular issues are “the revelation of Wang Lijun
event”, “careerist Bo Xilai” and “the public infighting in two sessions”, which were sold out of stock.
Yedo: “We can see a variety of movie plots from the case,
including favoritism, power struggles, poison, love and killing,
and the case is more amazing than any other
Hollywood blockbusters.
We can imagine the impact on the CCP system.
However, authorities do not want people to reflect on this,
and the desire for change in the CCP system.
Therefore, people are limited to only discuss the event
as a criminal case.”
According to Hong Kong media reports, after the Bo event,
the CCP Central Committee issued internal files.
These contained sentences such as “preventing foreign
reactionary publications.”
This was to keep sensitive books away from China.
Therefore, in many commercial presses in Hong Kong,
most books related with Bo Xilai are off the shelves.
However, bookstores in Causeway Bay were not affected.
Most books in these bookstores are banned by the CCP
and these books attract many mainland tourists.
One clerk said: “Some customers bought books a few days
ago, but Chinese Customs confiscated their books.
These customers came back today and bought the books
again. They mentioned they must read the books.”
