“How Do We Handle Chen Guangcheng?"
Cheng Guangcheng is free now!
Chen Guangcheng, China’s renowned blind rights-defense
activist is rumored to have visited the U.S. embassy
to seek asylum—greatly inspiring rights activists worldwide.
Crimes committed by Zhou Yongkang and the Political and
Legal Affairs Committee is once again exposed to the world.
However, exposure also tests sensitive US-China relations,
as the fourth round of the China-US Strategic and Economic
Dialogue nears, and how the Obama administration deals
with Chen’s event has become the focus of global attention.
Chen Guangcheng’s escape to freedom on April 21
was described as a miracle of “Heaven Blessing China".
This is the 2nd case within less than 3 months, in which a
Chinese citizen visited the U.S. diplomatic unit to seek help.
[Mo Fengjie, President, West Coast Chapter, Chinese
Political Refugee Association]: “It’s very exciting!”
“We all admire Chen Guangcheng so much, and Zhen Zhu
and all those rights-defense activists who have helped him!”
“All these people represent the righteousness
and the conscience of our Chinese nationality.”
“They’re just like Falun Gong practitioners—pursuing truth,
indomitable under the pressure of power, and yearning for
freedom!—Everybody says that this is a real miracle!"
Washington has long regarded Chen Guangcheng a fighter
for human rights, essentially different from Wang Lijun.
November—U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, openly
opposed the CCP’s house arrest of Chen Guangcheng.
So far, the U.S. has not confirmed that it will be granting
asylum to Chen.
On April 29, John Brennan, Assistant to President Obama,
said in a media interview that Obama now considers
striking an “appropriate balance " between advancing
human rights and maintaining Sino-U.S. relations.
Mo Fengjie: “I have an optimistic view—If Obama is able to
persist until the end to safeguard Chen Guangcheng’s
human rights, then he’ll gain more election votes, I believe.”
“Now citizens worldwide cast their votes for anti-communist
Candidates and feel disgusted with voting for communists.”
“This is the common aspiration of the people."
Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney,
criticizes Obama for being too weak in dealing with China.
Romney appealed to the White House to do everything
possible to protect Chen Guangcheng.
Dr. Ye Ke, PhD in Public Policy at Univ. of Southern California,
thinks that the Cheng Guangcheng Event may create in practice
a win-win opportunity for both side’s top leadership.
Ye Ke: “The CCP has long hoped for the U.S. to keep a low
profile on China’s human rights issues, and expects the U.S.
to talk the issue over, behind closed doors—But the Chen
Guangcheng event has opened a door for the issue.
This is a very good chance for the U.S. to state its position
on safeguarding human rights and universal values.
As for the CCP top officials, Hu, Wen and Xi Jinping, they
may seize this chance to address citizens’ cases of injustice,
especially the continued persecution exerted on Falun Gong.
This in fact is a very good opportunity for those CCP officials
to build prestige and win over citizens’ hearts and minds."
The fourth round of the US-China Strategic and Economic
Dialogue will be held in Beijing on May 3 and 4.
Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner,
are said to be attending the meeting.
Colin Campbell, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, allegedly
arrived in Beijing on April 29, days earlier than planned.
Is the White House arranging to fix the Chen Guangcheng
event?—The U.S. Department of State has not responded.
Ye Ke: “In the long run, healthy Sino-US relations must exist
on the basis of human rights, because when human rights is
lacking, the Chinese people long for a change—definitely
it will be a big change then, and how will the U.S. face that?”
Critics say the U.S. may temporarily need to set aside trade,
mutual military trust, and the South China Sea dispute.
Now the biggest problem seems to be:
“How do we handle Chen Guangcheng?"
