Ai Regrets Designing Bird’s Nest
Ai Weiwei, who participated in the design of Beijing’s
Olympic Stadium Bird’s Nest, is currently under strict monitoring in his home in Beijing by the authorities.
Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun reported on March 5, about Ai’s
realizations during the Olympic Games.
In an interview Ai said, the Chinese Communists Party (CCP)
used the stadium and the Olympics’ as a stage for self-praises.’
He found he was used by the government to spread
patriotic education, and he awakened.
After the Olympics, he did not look at the Bird’s Nest.
During the interview, Ai Weiwei accused the authorities
as “morally bankrupt,” and entering a stage of despair.
Ai Weiwei told Yomiuri Shimbun: “The CCP used the latest
technology and 700,000 guards in the security departments.
This was to suppress the general public during the Games.
It was just a stage to broadcast to the world its own glory."
He said that the Chinese government is seeking “no freedom
of speech or thought, one-sided pragmatism, and is currently in a desperate state of moral bankruptcy."
Gao Ying (Ai Weiwei’s mother): “He did not participate in
the Bird’s Nest opening ceremony.
He must have his opinions and thoughts.
Since he said so, that is what he thinks."
Wu Fan (Political commentator): “Ai Weiwei was beaten.
So he thought it over: CCP does not treat only him like this.
The CCP treats all people, the entire Chinese nation,
even its internal high-level officials like this.
It only cares about its own benefit. It uses you when
it needs to and treats you as trash when you have no use.”
Ai Weiwei told the Yomiuri Shimbun: “The worst sin
of dictatorship is killing the nation emotionally."
Ai continued: “I experienced all kinds of suffering
during my childhood. Many people helped me.
So I was able to withstand such a situation. However,
I doubt many people can keep a normal state of mind."
Wu Fan pointed out how CCP woke up Ai Weiwei. No matter
how much you have done for the CCP, it will kill you if you show you are not happy with it.
In the past, many intellectuals returning from abroad hoping
to help the CCP, were eventually labeled rightists and killed.
Ai Weiwei was once recognized by CCP as an artist. After
the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, Ai went to the hit areas.
He realized poor construction quality was the No.1 killer
of many children who died during the earthquake.
He started an investigation in spite of resistance
from the authorities.
On the first anniversary of the earthquake, Ai published
the names of 5,385 children who died during the earthquake.
Early last April, when the Jasmine Revolution spread on, Ai
was secretly detained for 3 months without a legal procedure. This act of CCP shocked the world.
Ai had said that when you try to understand this country,
you are in the risk of committing crimes.
At the end of last year, Ai received penalty on tax evasion
for RMB 15 million (US$2.4 million).
In a few days, nearly 20,000 people lent RMB 6 million
(US$ 1 million) in total to help Ai.
Wu Fan, “Ai Weiwei’s case was also a wake-up call
for intellectuals’ conscience.
However, some will never wake up, still following
the CCP to its dead end, which brings their misfortune.
People with consciousness will never trust the CCP,
and those people will become more and more.”
The CCP’ furious suppression of Ai Weiwei seems to produce
the opposite effect, and Ai becomes more famous in the world.
The documentary on Ai Weiwei: “Never Sorry,” was
premiered on Jan. 25, at the Sundance Film Festival in the US.
In addition, on Jan.28, the documentary won
a special Jury Prize in a competition.
Ai’s photography and video exhibitions
will be held in Paris Museum.
Radio France Internationale reported that CCP is in a difficult
situation with Ai’s case, it doesn’t know what to do next.
If it is to free Ai, he will be a great threat to the CCP regime;
if it is to detain him, Ai’s supporters will increase day by day.
