This young man used to be a drug addict.
“Sagie,” his pseudonym, has been able to stay clean for the past eight years. This is his story.
Sagie
[Sagie, Net Addict]:
“My first experience with drugs was around the age of 15. It began with alcohol and then marijuana. I did it out of curiosity and adventure. Among my close friends, taking drugs seemed magical at first, and that it didn’t really hurt me.”
One psychiatrist specializes in rehabilitating young addicts. He says many teenagers believe light drugs are not that dangerous. But they aren’t aware of the heavy consequences that can follow.
[Dr. Haim Mell, Psychiatrist, Head of the Israel Anti-Drug Authority]:
“There’s a general misunderstanding about substances that are not clearly defined as drugs because they are legal. Things such as liquid paper, air conditioning gas and glue. The damage they cause are sometimes much worse and far more severe than conventional drugs. These substances may cause behavioral disturbances and outbursts of anger, rage and violence. The long term use of these substances can harm the liver, kidneys, brain, and bone marrow…tremendous damage.”
[Sagie, Net Addict]:
“I wouldn’t call them light addictions because these are the most dangerous substances that exist today. Liquid paper and all sorts of non-persistent agents are all substances that causes damage to the brain.”
Sagie describes the harsh consequences of addiction.
Sagie
[Sagie, Net Addict]:
“I’ve seen people with damaged legs, arms, or with eczema – it didn’t seem like a human society anymore. It was more like some parallel hellish world that I was part of.”
It was at that point that Sagie realized he didn’t want to be an addict anymore.
[Sagie, Net Addict]:
“And maybe only after one hundred attempts [to go clean], my situation got worst until I found myself on the streets and was homeless. I was also in a very bad physical condition.”
The rehabilitation process is not simple. Sagie says it’s often accompanied by physical and emotional pain, and success stories are rare.
[Sagie, Net Addict]:
“Less than 10 out of 100 people are genuinely able to pull through and for a long period of time. It’s very problematic because addiction isn’t just a matter of will. This willpower was not enough, because of the drive, the passion to take another dose of drugs was stronger. Drug addiction had so much power over me that no goodwill could resist [that urge].”
After a process that will often take many years, some like Sagie are able to break free from their addiction. But can one remain ‘clean’ for the rest of their life?
[Dr. Haim Mell, Psychiatrist, Head of the Israel Anti-Drug Authority]:
“When we talk about the success rates in drug rehabilitation, we must understand that drugs differ from one another. The most problematic drug in Israel right now is heroin. It’s extremely addictive and it’s very hard to break free from. There is another point, and that is, it can be an addiction for life. Even after being clean for 20 years, they may still call themselves clean-addicts.”
