In a Reuters poll, three fourths of Chinese export businesses feared a wave of factory closures next year — because of falling international demand for Chinese exports.
The businesses were polled at Guangdong’s huge Canton Fair — an export trade show that has often functioned as a barometer of China’s export strength. Almost 60-thousand exhibiting exporters plied their wares to almost 300-thousand foreign buyers.
Yet up to 80% of the suppliers agreed that US and European financial woes had already hurt business, and feared more of the same going forward.
[Jack Ye, Owner, Kingdom Toys]:
“At the end of the year, this trend will become more apparent. Many factories that don’t have orders will close, directly affecting their cash flows… and when they aren’t able to repay their loans they will be forced to close."
China’s trade surplus narrowed for a second straight month in September, to $14.5 billion US dollars, with both imports and exports lower than expected.
[Bill Belchere, Global Chief, Mirae Asset Securities]:
“We think that contraction is going to last for another three or six months, so the export growth in Asia is probably going down to single digit; if not zero or negative. So the fact the Canton Fair is disappointing, simply confirms our view that we are going into a sharp slowing of the export circle for Asia."
Most economic observers agree that exports remain one of the keys to China’s economic growth. Trends like the current slowdown could mean difficulties avoiding a larger-scale slowdown, and related problems like the tightening of credit and depression of wages.
