Henry Tang: June 4th Incident is an “Isolated Incident"

Henry Tang, a candidate
in the Hong Kong Chief Executive election,
and the former Chief Secretary for Administration,
recently talked about the June 4th Incident for the first time,
describing it as an “isolated incident"
and avoiding mentioning the words “June 4th".
Tang’s remarks were denounced by Hong Kong social circles.

Even the media showed a landslide criticism of
his “standard answer".

On October 23, when Henry Tang attended the “Forum on
Hong Kong Education and Prospects", he was asked three
times about his views of the June 4th Incident and the activists
being detained by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) authorities.
Tang did not give a clear answer, describing
the June 4th Incident as an “isolated incident."

In a statement Henry Tang said: “It is understandable that there
existed some imperfections with mainland China’s development.
I know all your feelings about some individual events.
But I hope that all of you adopt a macroscopic view,
the so-called “the one who stands higher takes a broader view.”
We have seen how the nation overcome the challenges
for the past decades.”

Reporter: Henry Tang described the June 4th Incident as an
“isolated incident" and created a furor among all social circles in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements
in China, criticized him for polishing shoes for the Beijing regime.
Pro-democracy activists who experienced the June 4th Incident,
also commented that Henry Tang is pouring vinegar upon nitre.

Fang Zheng (Victim of June 4th Incident): “The June 4th Incident
is not an isolated incident.
It is certainly one of a series of tragedies made by the CCP
authorities during its years of reign over mainland China. ”

A pro-democracy activist, Zheng Cunzhu, said that he
remembered both Henry Tang and Tung Chee-hwa,
former Chief Executive, participating in the June 4th Incident
protests and published advertising of protests against CCP’s
suppression and demanding democratization in China.

Zheng Cunzhu (Pro-democracy activist): “Now time has changed,
with such positions, they would not express their true thoughts.
From the election of Chief Executive to Hong Kong government
officials, their speeches told us that there is no so-called
‘Hong Kong people administer for Hong Kong.’
Even Hong Kong officials’ remarks have been affected
by the CCP authorities.
They dare not express their true inner thoughts."

Besides Henry Tang, another hot candidate,
Leung Chun-ying, described June 4th Incident as
a “tragedy", but also said that he did not know the truth.

Earlier this October, Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai publicly stated
that she did not know about the June 4th Incident,
provoking the public’s fury.
Hong Kong Alliance asked her to withdraw the remarks and apologize in public.
On October 17th, Tiananmen Mother Ding Zilin published
a letter of protest.

On October 24, Hong Kong’s newspaper Ming Pao quoted
Chung Kim-wah, an assistant professor at
Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as saying that,
at least Leung and Rita Fan dared to say the
June 4th Incident is a “tragedy" and “unfortunate".
But Henry Tang used the country’s economic development
as an excuse to rationalize the June 4th Incident,
making his reply most disgusting.

Fang Zheng (Victim of June 4th Incident): “If he keeps
compliant with the CCP,, then there is a gap and difference
between his understanding and that ofthe majority of the
Hong Kong people, mainland Chinese people and people around the world.
I hope he can notice this point. ”

The fourth Hong Kong Chief Executive will not be selected
by universal suffrage.
Both Henry Tang and Leung Chun-ying are all pro-CCP.
Apple Daily lampooned that the June 4th Incident is
like a “demon-exposing mirror" to politicians.

Reporter: “In reality, the June 4th Incident is often used
to observe Hong Kong politicians for their consciences.
Recently, Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang was
rejected by four legislative councillors for taking a group photo with him.
Another three councillors on site, put on T-shirts written with
the wording: “Demand official rehabilitation of June 4th
Tiananmen movement”, to protest Tsang’s attitude towards June 4th Incident.

Three legislative councillors Hon Cyd Ho, Lee Cheuk-yan,
and Leung Yiu-chung, who are preparing to form the
New Labor Party, put on black T-shirts on purpose to
take photo’s with Donald Tsang, expressing that
they hope the history of June 4th Incident will be
hung on the wall in the Legislative Council forever.

At the 2009 question-and-answers session in Legco,
Donald Tsang hinted that Hong Kong people are no longer
dwelling on the June incident.
He once claimed that he was representing “all Hong Kong people’s views",
causing strong protests from the pro-democratic councillors.

Hong Kong is the only land in China to publicly commemorate
the June 4th Incident.
Since 1989, a rally has been held each year.

Due to the public’s attention, how to view the
June 4th Incident becomes a “required question”
for every Chief Executive, and a “Touchstone” for
testing a candidate’s position.
