Independent candidates running for
National People’s Congress (NPC) positions
were recently persecuted
by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime.
The candidates were threatened and
are facing ongoing detentions.
The lawyers they hired were also harassed
and beaten by police.
One of the lawyers asked, “If a lawyer’s safety can’t even
be ensured, how can the case be dealt with fairly?”
Sound of Hope radio reported that an independent candidate from Xinyu City in Jiangxi Province was brutally persecuted by local government departments. In an effort to investigate the government’s illegal actions during the latest local election, independent candidate, Li Sihua, and her lawyer, Wang Cheng, planned to visit the government office on Sept. 29. However, Li Sihua was abducted by local authorities the same day, and her whereabouts is still unknown.
Later that evening, lawyer Wang Cheng stayed at the Xinyu Jinding Hotel. At around 10 p.m., a group of armed police entered his hotel room and started to violently assault him. Wang Cheng’s head, arms, chest, and back were all injured from the beating. Shortly after, Wang Cheng was taken to the local police station and was not released until mid-afternoon the next day
Another independent candidate, Liu Ping, from Xinyu City went to Wang’s hotel room on the morning of the Sept. 30 and found a ¬complete mess.
Liu Ping, “When I entered the room, there was a big hole in the window. The entire window was broken to bits. The scene sent chills down my spine; I was trembling. The chair, electric coffee maker, hot plate, and electrical cords were all in pieces. The TV remote control unit, as well as a fruit plate and ashtray, were strewn all over the floor.”
Lawyer Wang Cheng told Voice of America that the police assaulted him, trying to prevent him from taking Li Sihua’s case and exposing the government’s illegal activities during the election voting process. He asked, “If a lawyer’s safety can’t even be ensured, how can the case be dealt with fairly?”
In early September, Li Sihua reported to NPC officials that the election voting process was rife with illegal activities. On election day, there were no voting stations and the voting location and date were not revealed to the public. Voters were not permitted to supervise the vote count and it was widely believed that the outcome of the vote was rigged.
Lawyer Wu Yuanshu from Wuhan was very unhappy about how the case was dealt with.
Wu Yuanshu, a NPC Election Supervision Committee Member, said, “Li Sihua’s personal freedom was restricted before, during, and after the election. When Wang Cheng went to talk to Li Sihua regarding the illegal activities in the election, Li Sihua’s freedom was again restricted. Not only was Wang Cheng’s personal freedom restricted, he was also beaten. Such actions are appalling!”
Lawyer Wu Yuanshu, who started the NPC Election Supervision Committee with Wang Cheng and Li Zhiyong, was also beaten by Xinyu City authorities on July 4.
Wu Yuanshu: “To expose the situation to the public, I will quickly publish details of the evidence that I’ve collected, in this case. To make it easier for NPC officials to investigate, I didn’t make the evidence public, but just gave details surrounding the circumstances. Now, I will publish the details of our allegations and evidence ASAP.”
On Sept. 29, Beijing officials said they would publicly announce the 13 independent NPC election candidates the following day. However, on the night of Sept. 29, most of the 13 independent candidates were detained or heavily monitored by the CCP regime.
On the morning of Sept. 30, independent candidate, Han Ying, was taken to the Haiding district Wanshou police station and detained until around 6 p.m. that afternoon.
Han Ying, “This is just a start; just a public announcement and they made such a big deal out of it. However, it will only get worse from here. However, I will persist. Since I already started exposing the truth, I will not give up in the middle. This is my right, and I will not give it up. I will persist and persevere!”
In addition, Wu Lihong, a candidate from the Beijing Chaoyang district and her two assistants were all detained by the CCP regime for 15 years.
Liu Ping, “All of our actions were conducted according to state laws. These people who are destroying the elections are thugs, not citizens. Citizens obey national laws and regulations. Those who violate laws are these thugs!”
