Snipers in Tibet’s Jokhang Temple
This year is the 60th anniversary of
the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP)
first displacement of armies into Tibet.
Since May, Lhasa authorities have refused
to issue foreigners travel permits to Tibet.
On July 19, Beijing authorities attended
CCP anniversary activities outside the Potala Palace.
To prevent any so-called “Tibetan independence forces”
from entering the Potala Palace,
the palace was ordered to close from July 18 to 20,
with a massive army and police presence.
Snipers have taken up positions
atop several important temples.
According to reports,
Tibetan authorities are organizing the events and
sending massive police and army forces to patrol Lhasa;
stand guard at crossings, interrogate tourists,
and monitor hotels, around-the-clock.
Tourism in Tibet will be back to normal in August.
Kelsang Gyaltsen, special envoy
of the Tibetan government in exile
said that under the tight grip of the army and police,
there is no joy in Lhasa at all.
Kelsang Gyaltsen said: “Tibetans say that
the CCP required everyone to be joyful,
after the so-called ‘liberation of Tibet’.”
But since Lhasa is controlled by army and police,
with snipers all around,
there is no joy under such conditions.”
Kelsang Gyaltsen said that the CCP is repressing,
arresting and sentencing people in Tibet.
Under such conditions, the large-scale activities
held by the CCP are just for show, a “face project.”
On July 16, at the White House,
U.S. President Obama met with
Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama,
amidst CCP protests.
Lan Shu, a current affair commentator, said that
Obama met with the Dalai to put attention on
China’s lack of religion freedom and human rights,
possibly resulting in an escalated confrontation
between the U.S. and China, over conflicting values.
Lan Shu said: “Although Tibet is a hotspot,
the economic dependence between U.S. and China is decreasing
while the competition is increasing,
especially in the area of values.
Faced with Obama’s meeting with the Dalai Lama,
it should be expected that Beijing will
respond with a show of strength.”
On July 18, the Dalai Lama said that
the selection of his successor should
never be controlled by Beijing authorities.
Kelsang Gyaltsen said:
“The CCP shifts all of the blame to the Dalai Lama
to intentionally defame him and misrepresents
his centrism as his abject desire to seek Tibet’s independence.
Thus, the CCP will only bring about more discontent
among Tibetans for not addressing the growing problems
in Tibet and by repressing the Dalai Lama
and hurting people’s hearts.”
Voice of Tibet in Norway reported on July 17 that
a monk called Duojie in Naqu, Tibet was arrested
in a temple by police after celebrating
the Dalai Lama’s 76th birthday, on July 6.
The monk’s younger brother,
who is a middle school student, was also arrested.
