Why Is Hong Kong Unwelcoming to Leung Chun-Ying?
Occupy Central has entered its fifth week, and large posters
of Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying have flooded
the streets of Admiralty and Mong Kok.
Hong Kong residents have widely demanded for Leung
to step down.
Even pro-Beijing camp Legislative Council James Tien
suggested Leung resign.
Why is Leung Chun-ying unwelcome in Hong Kong?
Let’s take a look.
On the posters Leung Chun-ying is depicted with pointy
eyebrows, cunning eyes and scary fangs.
This seems to represent Hong Kongers vision of Leung.
So what has caused this?
On Oct. 22, the BBC Chinese published an article
by Canadian Liang Muxian that addresses this question.
Liang Muxian, once an underground Communist Party
member in Hong Kong, stated that past experience has
helped to sense strategies and deployment of underground
Communist party’s intention to change Hong Kong.
Back in 2010, Liang Muxian had warned Hong Kong about
the conspiracy between the Communist Central Committee
and the underground party.
He believed Leung Chun-ying was a deliberately
and carefully cultivated candidate for Chief Executive.
In 2012, Leung Chun-ying indeed became
the Chief Executive with 689 votes.
Since then, the “one country, two system"
and “high degree of autonomy" existed in name only.
Hong Kong Legislative Council Sin Chung-kai: “We all say,
there is a writer who wrote a book called “Hong Kong
Underground Party;"
it says that instead of “one man, one vote,"
[the leader] is only hand-picked by Beijing.
Therefore, civil disobedience is the only way
for the people of Hong Kong to have him step down."
The article also said that two years after taking office,
Leung Chun-ying has demonstrated the Communist thinking
and ruling, such as forcibly implementing the national
education curriculum, rejecting free TV license, developing
multiple Red Guard-style organizations, and mobilizing
the masses to struggle.
The Communist regime’s White Paper on Hong Kong
and the National People’s Congress decision on the fake
election have all awaken the Hong Kongers who decided
to fight for universal suffrage in 2017 Chief Executive.
Sin Chung-kai: “He was elected relying on media attacks
against his opponent Henry Tang, regarding his unauthorized
home construction scandal.
But prior to taking office, Leung Chun-ying was also
exposed to be in ownership of unauthorized buildings.
He has lost his credibility for one.
Last year his intention to implement the national education
curriculum offended many Hong Kong people who feel
that he was promoting the red education, that’s two.
Third, in 2013, he solely negated a Broadcasting Authority
proposal in handling TV licensing.
This caused a large mass movement in Hong Kong."
Leung Chun-ying has not only ignored public opinion,
but also frequently used heavy rhetoric.
On Oct. 19, Leung said in a TV interview that “foreign forces"
had played a role in the street protests.
“Leung Chun-ying, said Monday evening that it was
unacceptable to allow his successors to be chosen in open
elections, in part because doing so would risk giving poorer
residents a dominant voice in politics", reported
the New York Times.
Leung’s comments affect half of the population of Hong Kong
who earn HK $14,000 ($1,800) a month, added NY Times.
The New York Times further reported that, “the march
showed that the pro-democracy movement is not just about
lofty ideals but rooted in real social problems."
Chinese social issues researcher Zhang Jian: “In the 20 plus
days of Occupy Central, he has been playing a very
disgraceful role in ignoring Hong Kong people’s freedom
and democracy as well as the future.
Other than the mediocre tactics of employing arm
suppression, tear gas, triad officers, he has not
demonstrated any generosity and gracious attitude
of a leadership;
He has no respect of democracy or understanding
of the rule of law.
Hong Kong people are clear now he must be
either a CCP accomplice or puppet."
On Oct. 24, pro-Beijing camp Legislative Council James Tien
indicated that other than the issue of universal suffrage,
Leung Chun-ying has not performed well
over the past two years.
He said that faced with Occupy Central
and the non-cooperation, Leung is not expected
to accomplish anything even if he continues
in the remaining term.
Therefore, he suggested that Leung should take
the initiative to resign to the Central.
Sin Chung-kai: “James Tien simply reflected the opinion
of the pro-Beijing camp.
Many of them have been critical of Leung Chun-ying,
but not in public.
The CCP has issued the demand to support Leung Chun-ying
through various pro-Beijing camp channels."
The Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez
told Voice of America that Beijing will not get “sentimental"
over Leung Chun-ying;
Once they realized that he was a “liability,"
they want to get rid of him.
