Rui Chenggang: Facing Death Penalty Due to Espionage Involvement?
Famous CCTV host Rui Chenggang has been in detention
pending investigation for two months.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities have not
yet released the specific details and the charges involved
in Rui’s case.
Recently, the real-name authentication microblogging
account of the Associate Researcher of the Chinese
Academy of Social Sciences said that Rui Chenggang
is involved in espionage.
His case is “unimaginably severe"
and he could face the death penalty.
On Sept. 8, which is China’s traditional Mid-Autumn Festival,
Wang Guoxiang, whose verified microblog title is, “Associate
Researcher at Academy of Social Sciences, counter-terrorism
expert and expert of Middle East and military,"
posted a short message with a photo of Rui Chenggang
on his microblog.
The message says, “In the days each family unites,
what could imprisoned people think?
Representative Rui might face the death penalty.
You have so much money, acted as a spy,
your mind might be broken?"
Wang Guoxiang also says on the microblog,
“His case is an unimaginably serious one
rather than ordinarily severe.
If the verdict is not the death penalty, then I’m afraid
everyone will want to become a traitor in the future."
After Wang Guoxiang’s message was made public, a few
thousand netizens soon replied and forwarded his posting.
Political commentator Tang Jingyuan:
“Rui Chenggang is involved in espionage.
This should be a big CCTV scandal,
and even of the Communist propaganda system.
As one representative figure of the CCP’s mouthpiece
and of the so-called “patriotism,"
Rui Chenggang has actually been exposed
to have committed treasonous and traitorous acts."
37-year-old Rui Chenggang from Hefei graduated
from the International Trade Department
of China Foreign Affairs University.
He has worked for CCTV since 2003.
On the one hand, Rui Chenggang became popular
because of his fluent English and young image.
On the other hand, he was touted by CCP official media
as the voice of the CCP on many international occasions
as well as his high-profile “patriotic" stance.
On April 7, 2009, at the G20 press conference in London,
arrogantly claiming to represent Asia and the world,
Rui Chenggang questioned United States President
Barack Obama.
In September 2011, at the closing ceremony
of the Davos Forum in Dalian, American ambassador
Gary Locke flew economy class to attend the meeting,
at which Rui Chenggang scoffed.
Rui Chenggang was then called a “patriotic thief."
Tang Jingyuan: “Rui Chenggang was involved in espionage,
and his case can be said to be of one of the vividest
interpretations of the CCP’s brainwashing system.
We can see in the CCP’s brainwashing system
what extent a person like him could be twisted.
That’s the manifestation of integrating two extremes
of “patriotism" and “treason" on Rui Chenggang."
Therefore, netizens questioned, if this espionage is true,
will the CCP authorities really sentence him to death?
Zhang Zanning, a Law professor of Southeast University
in Mainland China, says, “Under the Chinese regime,
the case depends on specific situations.
If it violates unspoken rules of the authorities
or violates the authority’s bottom line,
it is likely he will face the death penalty.
If it is a general spy case,
he will generally not be sentenced to death."
On July 11 of this year, Rui Chenggang was taken away
from CCTV by the Procuratorate staff.
The authorities did not disclose the reason
for his detention.
But according to insiders, he is suspected
of corruption inside CCTV.
Mainland microblogs also broke the news that
in addition to economic issues, Rui Chenggang is also
involved in providing information to United States
intelligence agencies, and he is an American spy.
He was one member of a well-known international company
of shareholders.
But the relevant post was subsequently deleted.
It is peculiar that after this espionage news was released
on Sina, such sensitive information has not been deleted.
Tang Jingyuan: “Now we can see that Xi Jingping
and Jiang Zemin’s faction intensely fight for control
over the right to speak among propaganda system.
Xi Jinping wants to take back control from Liu Yunshan
for the right to speak.
If the charges against Rui Chenggang are published,
this will become a very powerful weapon.
Such a big scandal, such a serious case occurred under
the direct supervision of Liu Yunshan.
From this point of view, microblogs exposing
the information is likely to be one kind of leaked test."
However, in the interaction with netizens, Wang Guoxiang
said Chinese authorities may fear shame,
and finally use the corruption charges
to end Rui Chenggang’s espionage case.
