Attention is Given to Chinese Prisoners of Conscience as Mid-Autumn Day Approaches
Sept. 8 is Mid-Autumn Day, a traditional Chinese festival
when families unite in celebration.
This reminds us of many prisoners of conscience
who are still suffering in Mainland China.
The Hong Kong Alliance began a movement of sending
moon cakes to imprisoned dissidents to call on
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to release them.
Hu Jia, the famous Chinese human rights activist,
also called for mailing moon cakes to family members
of political prisoners.
Let’s look at the report below.
As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the Hong Kong
Alliance (in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements
of China) began several activities calling attention to Chinese
rights activists and Hong Kong’s struggle for suffrage.
The Alliance announced on a rights protection website
Canyu.org, “The Mid-Autumn Festival is a family day;
However, Chinese dissidents and rights activists
are frequently illegally detained or even imprisoned
on forged charges; they have been separated
from family for a long time.”
“In addition, dissidents that were forced to leave their home
country are not able to go home and meet their families.”
The day before the Mid-Autumn Day (Sept. 7), the Alliance
took moon cakes to the Hong Kong government, requesting
Leung Chun-ying forward those cakes to dissidents
imprisoned by the CCP such as Gao Zhisheng, Guo Quan,
Guo Feixiong, Liu Xianbin and Hong Kong publisher
Yiu Man-tin.
Hong Kong Alliance Staff: “This is to send greetings
to those on Mid-Autumn Day.
We have been doing this every year.
The goal is to call attention to them and wish them
a reunion with their families in the future.”
The Alliance also urged Leung to deliver Hong Kong
people’s messages to the CCP.
That is, “release all dissidents, allow all exiled dissidents to go
back home and unite with their family on Mid-Autumn Day.”
Immediately following his release from house arrest, Hu Jia,
the famous Beijing human rights activist, also began
a movement of mailing moon cakes to family members
of political prisoners.
Hu Jia, Chinese human rights activist: “Every family should
unite but those political prisoners are not able to meet
with their families.
Despite a full moon, they don’t have a full family
on Mid-Autumn Day.
We hope to relax their suffering a little bit.
I think this is simply our duty to do that.”
Guo Quan, an associate professor at Nanjing Normal
University, had criticized the one-party dictatorship
and founded the China New Democracy Party.
Because of that, Guo was arrested by the CCP in 2008
and later sentenced to ten years in prison for
“subversion of state power.”
Hu Jia has mailed moon cakes to Guo’s mother
Gu Xiao in 2013.
Gu Xiao told the news to Guo Quan during her visit to him.
Guo was inspired as he learned about public attention
to his experience.
Rao Wenwei, former political and legal committee secretary
of Wushan County in Chongqing, had written 52 articles
criticizing the CCP.
Those articles were published on the website
of the Epoch Times.
In 2008, Bo Xilai ordered that Rao be sentenced.
Thus, Rao was sentenced to 12 years in prison
for “inciting subversion of state power.”
Hu Jia: ”His (Rao Wenwei’s) father is alone and helpless.
I have mailed sugar-free moon cakes to his father.”
Lu Jiaping, a famous Chinese history scholar, wrote
an article, “Two Traitors, Two Fakes," exposing the true
historical background for former CCP leader Jiang Zemin.
Lu also demanded investigation of Jiang.
In 2011, Lu was sentenced to 10 years in prison also
for so-called, “inciting subversion of state power.”
In 2013, Hu Jia mailed moon cakes to Lu’s wife Yu Junyi
who lived in Shaoyang, Hunan province.
However, Yu had not received the cakes probably
due to interference by Shaoyang’s authority.
This year, Hu Jia again mailed moon cakes to Yu,
as a blessing to the aged woman.
Yu Haochen, son of Lu Jiaping: ”Under the CCP’s political
situation, most families of political prisoners suffer a lot.
Of course my mom is happy to receive moon cakes
on Mid-Autumn Day.
There is always attention to Lu Jiaping and his families.
This gives us some relaxation and comfort in our minds.”
The Hong Kong Alliance also announced that on the evening
of Sept. 7 and 8, a “Mid-Autumn Democracy Lighting Event”
will be held at Tsim Sha Tsui’s bell tower.
The event is to call for attention of human rights issues
in China and wish the best to all Chinese dissidents
and rights activists.
The event will also distribute yellow silk ribbons as an
emblem of “returning power to the people with real suffrage.”
The Alliance called on Hong Kong residents to wear
the ribbon each day, to show their determination
in fighting for a real suffrage.
