Chinese Communist Party Speeds up Prosecution
of Dissidents in Custody
The Communist Communist Party (CCP) is speeding up
prosecution of detained dissidents as Christmas and the
New Year approaches.
According to AP’s report on Dec. 18, more than
six rights lawyers confirmed that prosecutors and
courts in various Chinese localities recently moved to
indict or to put on trial several dissidents and activists
in the coming weeks.
Some of the cases, pending for months, have suddenly
picked up speed in the past few days, says the AP report.
The lawyers told AP, “perhaps moving them to court
while Western diplomats, rights groups, and
China-based foreign
reporters might be off-duty for the holidays.”
Beijing activist Hu Jia tells Radio Free Asia, it is a common
practice in China for trials of dissidents in China to always
be rushed during the western holiday seasons.
Guo Feixiong Secretly Prosecuted
Guangzhou dissident Guo Feixiong was detained in August
on charges of “gathering people to disturb public place order".
The prosecution was delivered to the Procuratorate
without prior notification of his lawyer.
Radio Free Asia reports, Shandong lawyer Chen Guangwu
was only informed on Dec. 18, when he visited
Guo Feixiong in Guangzhou detention center.
The written notice stated the police delivered the case to the
procuratorate on Dec. 12.
Attorney Chen Guangwu says prior to his meeting with Guo,
he called the police many times about the progress of the case.
The police response was it was still under investigation.
He finally had to visit Guo in Guangzhou because
he could not get hold of relevant officers.
Then he realized the police delivered the lawsuit notice
to Guo on Dec. 15.
Attorney Chen Guangwu believes the police violated the
law by not notifying lawyers they delivered the legal notice.
Yunnan University Students Protest Against Power Off
On the evening of Dec. 18, thousand of students from the
Tourism and Culture College,Yunnan University protested.
Students explain that Yunnan recently encountered
a rare bout of cold weather.
The temperature dropped to three to four degrees
below zero at night.
However, for six consecutive days, random power off
took place at the University.
The school also confiscated appliances from students
in the name of prohibiting high-power electronics
such as heaters, kettles, even shavers and lamps.
About a thousand students gathered at a nearby supermarket
to protest by setting fires with garbage and books.
Students complained on the Internet, that the school is
over crowded through over-enrollments.
Power outages occur frequently as a result.
However, many students Internet posts have been removed.
