Villagers Beg For Help – Ignored by Officials
A group of villagers kneeled down and cried for help
from an official, who stood dismissively,
folded hands behind his back.
The photo was circulated like crazy online.
The official in the photo was the director of Beizhi Village,
Guyue, Pingshan County, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province.
According to netizens, local officials rent out 6000 mu
of forest at a very low price of 900 yuan per year in 2001.
They have let developers build a tourist scenic spot,
and signed a 30 year contract.
Since then, the scenic spot and villagers often had conflicts.
In recent years, the scenic spot usurped grain fields
and private hills for various reasons from the villagers.
In March 2013, the scenic personnel demolished village
buildings, upsetting villagers who were angry about it.
On April 30, the two sides clashed; the secretary of the village
and the director supporting the villagers were arrested.
Afterwards the director of Beizhi Village came to inspect,
a group of villagers who were kneeling down to beg
for release of those arrested, but the director faced the sky with apathy.
On May 6th nearly two thousand private teachers
from different cities of Shandong Province, gathered.
They went to the provincial committee for petition,
asking to implement the requirements of Division 8
so the teachers could solve medical and pension issues.
According to Radio Free Asia, police in Jinan learned
about it first, and went to hotels to search at midnight.
Many teachers were arrested and sent back to their local areas.
Some teachers were blocked on the road to the provincial
committee building by riot police.
The report said deputy director of Jinan Municipal Public
Security Bureau went to the site to command in person.
He verbally threatened the demonstrators.
According to the protesters, several representatives of
teachers went into the petition bureau to meet the officials concerned.
They asked for a clear reply. But the officials perfunctorily
delayed the same reaction as before.
Teachers participating in the demonstration said
this action was with careful consideration.
They will petition for at least three days, and
will never retreat without achieving their goals.
