In Beijing, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s
two sessions, People’s Congresses and
Political Consultative Conference,
has attracted the attention of global media.
People in mainland China are themselves also
obliged to take interest, as they are inconvenienced in a big way.
Because various restrictions implemented for the
two sessions are seriously interfering with peoples lives,
the two sessions are called as the
“disturbing-people General Assembly”.
Especially for Beijing citizens, as even their most basic travel
arrangements are severely affected.
They complain that the “two session traffic disaster"
makes them late for school and work,
and makes the fuel consumption of their cars increase.
During the two sessions, there are restrictions to hawkers,
foreign vehicles, speeches in micro-blogging and so on.
These restrictions are hard for Beijing’s citizens to take.
Many people complain online that the “disturbing-people
General Assembly” should either be canceled,
or be moved and held in remote areas away from the capital.
What makes people dissatisfied also includes
the status of the two-session representatives.
They think that the representatives of the two sessions are
either rich or powerful, with many being corrupt officials.
They only represent the interests of powerful people at the top,
but not of the people. It’s a party of officials, businessmen and aristocrats.
The netizens also reflect on the fact that most of the
representatives of the two sessions are “foreigners”,
saying: “The representatives of the two sessions are either
foreigners or the parents of foreigners.”
The netizens appeal for the nationalities of the representatives
to be verified and publicized.
They mock: “Foreigners are prevented from interfering with
China’s internal affairs!”
Netizens also say that this is the real “illegal assembly".
The officials’ speeches in the two sessions are also
the objects of public ridicule.
In addition to Wen Jiabao’s government work report
which is derided as “running a Chinese pharmacy",
the report on the conference of the two sessions
is satirized by netizens:
“All those with vague answers must be
on the topic of people’s livelihood.
All those with tough answers must be
on the topic of maintaining stability.
All those with lack of confident answers must be
on the topic of diplomacy.
All those with evasive answers must be
on the topic of political reform.
All those without answers and from those who pretend not
to hear must be
on the topic of officials’ three big consumptions and
of openness on property details.”
The luxury spending on two Sessions leaves the public
furious. According to data published on the internet,
there are 3000 representatives, 3000 journalists, 739000 security
guards and many service staff who work for two sessions”.
Netizens concluded that there are on average 248 people
to serve one representative.
People have questioned how much in fees has been spent on
two Sessions each year? When can this figure be made public?
If these fees, which cost hundreds of millions yuan,
were to be used on education, healthcare,
the minimum living fund and employment,
What improvement would be visible in China’s situation?
