Jiang Zemin: “Gadhafi Is My Close Friend."
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities promptly
changed their attitude towards Moammar Gadhafi after his death.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry official publicly stated that
Gadhafi is not a friend of China, but a guest of the West.
However, Chinese netizens noted that
former CCP General Secretary, Jiang Zemin, praised Gadhafi as a close friend, during his visit to Libya.
Gadhafi also claimed that he is a friend of China;
of the same camp.
With Gadhafi’s death, Libya ended eight months of civil war.
Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) leader, Abdul Jalil,
said on October 24, that a new interim government will be formed within two weeks.
The Libyan people appear optimistic that this will indeed happen.
On October 25, a NTC official said that Gadhafi will be buried
in secret desert location.
Gadhafi’ life ended, but was he a friend of the CCP?
The question sparked an online debate between
Chinese netizens and CCP authorities.
The spat started on October 22, when Lu Shaye,
director of the CCP Department of African Affairs,
in a exclusive interview with French newsmagazine,
Jeune Afrique, claimed, “Gadhafi is not a friend of China,
but a guest of the West."
Chinese netizens did not sympathize with Gadhafi,
but when seeing the CCP turn against its old friend, they expressed strong indignation.
Netizens revealed that in 2002, when Jiang Zemin visited
Libya, he praised Gadhafi as “a close friend."
According to news reports on April 13, 2002,
Gadhafi held a meeting with Jiang in his Tripoli apartment, which was bombed by the United States in 1986.
Thereafter, Gadhafi frequently met with foreign dignitaries
in the bombed out apartment so that they could witness the so-called “traces of U.S. aggression."
During their talks, Jiang said, “Gadhafi is my close friend.
Although our countries are oceans apart, our hearts are very close.
I have always dreamed of visiting Libya,
and now my wish has finally come true.”
Gadhafi embraced Jiang Zemin several times.
On July 18, 2010, CCP-backed, Phoenix TV, interviewed Gadhafi
on the program, Dialogue with World Leaders.
Host Anthony Yuen claimed that Westerners tend to look at Gadhafi
through rose-colored glasses.
Yuen praised Gadhafi as a very poetic writer.
In the exclusive interview, Anthony Yuen asked Gadhafi
how he views China’s foreign policy, to which Gadhafi replied:
Gaddafi: “We are a good friend of China.
We belong to the same camp, the third world.
China is not an imperialist nation, nor is it a colonial state,
nor a capitalist country.
In order to win more friends and to support and safeguard
China’s interests, Libya has done a lot of work.
Many African countries have maintained diplomatic relations
with the government of Taiwan, but not with China.
We have done lots to convince them to forge ties with China."
Gadhafi: “Libya has done a lot of work to safeguard
China’s interests."
Gadhafi even considered a visit to China.
Anthony Yuen: “So, your excellency plan to visit China recently?"
Gadhafi: “Yes, I’m considering it."
Anthony Yuen: “So, what kind of strategy or policy
you’re trying to go deal with China now?”
Gadhafi: “It sure does. China needs Libya.
Libya is a country that can provide oil, gas, and
other natural resources to China.
We can certainly cooperate in these areas."
Before Gadhafi’s death, the CCP talked up the idea
that the West actively entered the war against Libya, to overthrow the Gadhafi regime.
The CCP claims the West had an eye on Libya’s vast resources
and were preparing to “divide up the booty in Libya.”
The CCP’s statement shows that “the tea is getting cold
as soon as the guest is gone.”
Netizens commented, “China’s policy is too inflexible."
An article authored by Lang Yaoyuan said that the CCP
wantonly interferes with human rights in China,
but dares not interfere with the evildoings in other countries,
gloriously labeling any form of foreign interference as
“interfering in China’s internal affairs."
But in the end, enemies of the Chinese people keep increasing,
while friends are fewer and fewer.
The article pointed out that, it is not “Chinese people’s
old friends" who have become the rarest type in the world,
thus no exception, it is “the dictator" who became
the world’s most endangered type.
